Planning what to wear is often the most significant source of stress for families leading up to a photo session. I hear it all the time—especially from moms trying to coordinate multiple outfits while juggling a packed calendar.
But here's the good news: it doesn't have to be overwhelming.
As a Houston-based family photographer, I specialize in helping clients feel confident and prepared, starting with an in-home wardrobe consultation that takes the pressure off. Here's a guide to simplify your choices and bring everything together beautifully, especially in our unique Texas coastal weather.
Instead of dressing everyone the same, I recommend selecting a cohesive color palette built around jewel tones and neutrals, like navy, olive, deep teal, soft gray, or warm beige. These tones work well with most complexions and photographs with richness and depth.
Avoid extremes like bright white or stark black—these can reflect or absorb too much light and often distract from the people in the frame.
To keep things visually clean and classic, I typically suggest only one person wear a pattern—usually mom or grandma. A soft floral or subtle print adds enough visual interest without overwhelming the overall look.
Everyone else? Stick to solid colors from your palette. Doing so brings balance and keeps the attention on connection, not clashing clothes.
Kids want to feel like themselves, so avoid anything itchy, stiff, or overly trendy. Make sure clothes allow for movement, sitting, hugging, and running.
Barefoot is also a beautiful, natural option for in-home sessions with little ones.
Here’s where most of my clients breathe a sigh of relief: I come to your home to help plan your family’s wardrobe.
We’ll lay out options right on the bed or sofa, discuss what photographs are best in your space or location, and make decisions together—no more last-minute guesswork, group texts, or shopping stress.
Houston's heat can surprise you year-round, so it's important to choose fabrics that breathe and layer well:
Spring/Summer: Think cotton, linen, and other natural fabrics in soft, muted colors. Lightweight dresses and short sleeves are perfect.
Fall/Winter: Heavy coats are rarely needed. Stick with layered knits, cardigans, or long sleeves in textured fabrics that photograph well and keep you comfortable.
This Houston family kept things simple and refined. Mom wore a royal blue dress with soft texture and movement, while Dad and the boys coordinated in cool-toned solids—sky blue, white, and khaki. The result? A timeless look that felt natural, elevated, and just right for their summer session.
Wardrobe planning doesn’t have to be another thing on your to-do list—it can be part of what makes the session feel exciting. With thoughtful choices, a cohesive color story, and a little help, your portraits will feel true to your family and look beautiful for years to come.
Book your consultation today, and let’s create something beautiful, starting with what’s already in your closet.
