Styling your family session - what does that mean?
Your session should be as unique as your family. Everybody has a different story, and your portrait should tell that story.
Let's begin with locations. Many clients have portraits done in their homes or at a location special to them. Do you enjoy outdoor events, sports, being at the beach, or going on adventures? Let's incorporate that into your portraits. Just some examples below:
- Classic automobiles or motorcycles
- Outdoor activities you do together, such as golfing or camping
- Spending time on the beach or at a lake
- Charities that you support, such as religious communities, special needs organizations, or fostering animals for adoption
Think about what you hold dear to your heart and we will incorporate that into your portrait.
Secondly, you want to look your best whether the session involves just you and your partner or an extended family portrait with out-of-town members visiting for an occasion or holiday. Viewers of your portrait should focus on the faces, not wardrobe issues, right?
Here are a few helpful tips that I share with clients:
- Solid colors work best, starting with one or two base colors (think jeans/khaki/neutrals) and then some complimentary colors. Avoid a lot of busy patterns and stripes.
- Wearing a shirt/blouse with sleeves usually works best.
- Consider accessories that compliment your personality, whether that may be a hat, scarf, special jewelry, or favorite jacket.
- Plan for a more formal look and casual clothes for a second option.
- Bring a variety of footwear along with your wardrobes.
Many of my clients have found these tips helpful in planning their sessions. You can see a few below.
When you are ready for your session, I look forward to hearing from you.
