Families get scattered across states, countries, even continents. Even my small family is scattered across Texas and one out of state. My oldest is forty miles away, the middle one is nine hours away, and the youngest is about 300 miles. The last time we were all together in one place was for college graduation and of course, it rained the whole weekend until Sunday afternoon as we're getting ready to split back up. My wife and I knew that this would be the last time everybody would be together for a while.
Knowing a little about the campus, there's a large quadrant of grass and trees and a landmark of the university. Having friends who work there helps, but so does Google Maps! We planned on avoiding the sun, but an overcast day took care of that for us. I typically face my clients away from the sun, using it as a second light source to accent instead of lighting my client. That usually means north, by the way.
So here's the result that we had in a few minutes.
So what are a few guidelines for a great portrait?
Wear 3/4 or full-length sleeves. Bare arms, even in long sleeves, can be distracting from what is important, those lovely faces!
I usually recommend solid colors, usually a mix of jewel tones and neutrals. Patterns and stripes are usually flattering in photographs. They can also date a portrait in a few years.
Have fun with accessories, such as scarves, hats, jackets, and even a cane or handbag.
Now I mentioned using solid colors, but don't worry about being too matchy-matchy. Various shades of one color work great.
Bring a few different types of footwear.
Whether you are indoor or out, either is a great option for your portrait. This holds true for branding purposes as well.
Have more questions? I'd love to hear from you!
